B] The freezing Northeast hasn't been a terribly fun place to
spend time this winter, so when the chance came for a weekend to Sarasota, Florida, my bags were packed before you could say “sunshine”. I left for the land of warmth and vitamin C (维生素
C), thinking of beaches and orange trees. When we touched down to blue skies and warm air, I sent up a small prayer of gratefulness. Swimming pools, wine tasting, and pink sunsets (at normal evening hours, not 4 in the afternoon) filled the weekend, but the best part — particularly to my taste, dulled by months of cold-weather root vegetables — was a 7 a.m. adventure to the Sarasota farmers' market that proved to be
more than worth the early wake-up call.

The market, which was founded in 1979, sets up its tents every Saturday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine, along North Lemon and State streets. Baskets of perfect red strawberries; the red-painted sides of the Java Dawg coffee truck; and most of all, the tomatoes: amazing, large, soft and round red tomatoes.

Disappointed by many a broken, vine-ripened (蔓上成熟 的) promise, I've refused to buy winter tomatoes for years. No matter how attractive they look in the store, once I get them home they're unfailingly dry, hard, and tasteless. But I homed in, with uncertainty, on one particular table at the Brown's Grove Farm's stand, full of fresh and soft tomatoes the size of my fist. These were the real deal — and at that moment, I realized that the best part of Sarasota in winter was going to be eating things that back home in New York I wouldn't be experiencing again for months.

Delighted as I was by the tomatoes in sight, my happiness deepened when I learned that Brown's Grove Farm is one of
the suppliers for Jack Dusty, a newly opened restaurant at the Sarasota Ritz Carlton, where — luckily for me — I was planning to have dinner that very night. Without even seeing the menu, I knew I'd be ordering every tomato on it.

1.What did the author think of her winter life in New York?

A.Exciting.

B.Boring.

C.Relaxing.

D.Annoying.

由第一段中的“The freezing Northeast hasn't been a terribly fun place to spend time this winter”可知, 作者厌倦了纽约的冬天,因为那里根本没有乐趣,所以可以推断 出作者认为纽约的冬天是令人厌烦、枯燥和单调的。故选B项。 答案:B

2.What made the author's getting up early worthwhile? A.Having a swim. B.Breathing in fresh air. C.Walking in the morning sun. D.Visiting a local farmers' market. 由“... the best part ... was a 7 a.m. adventure to the Sarasota farmers' market that proved to be more than worth the early wake-up call.”

3.What can we learn about tomatoes sold in New York in winter?

A.They are soft.

B.They look nice.

C.They taste great.

D.They are juicy.

I've refused to buy winter

tomatoes for years.”

No matter how attractive they look in the store,

once I get them home they're unfailingly dry, hard, and tasteless.”

4.What was the author going to do that evening? A.Go to a farm. B.Check into a hotel.
C.Eat in a restaurant. D.Buy fresh vegetables. I learned that ... to have dinner that very night.”,句中的“that very night”是关键信息词。

读文技法——行为线索读文法 抓住第一段的关键词“this winter, Sarasota, Florida, I left”,这些词汇交代了故事发生的时间、地点、人物;抓 住第二、三段中的“The market” “full of fresh and soft tomatoes” “the best part of Sarasota in winter was going to be eating things that back home in New York I wouldn't be experiencing again for months”及第四段中的“I was planning to have dinner that very night”,可迅速梳理出文 章的行文脉络:

由题干中的关键词“her winter life in New York”可迅速

1.What did the author think of her winter life in New York?

A.Exciting.

B.Boring.

C.Relaxing.

D.Annoying.

The freezing Northeast hasn't been a

(1)What's the writer's attitude towards ...? (2)What is the author's opinion on ...?
(3)What does the author think about ...?

(1)表示支持或肯定:positive 积极乐观的; supportive 支持的;

optimistic 乐观的;

(2018届高三·湖北省八校第一次联考) I was born on the 17th of November 1828, in the village of Nam Ping, which is about four miles southwest of the Portuguese Colony (殖民地) of Macao, and is located on Pedro Island lying west of Macao, from which it is separated by a channel of half a mile wide.

As early as 1834, an English lady, Mrs.Gutzlaff, wife of a missionary to China, came to Macao.Supported by the Ladies'
Association in London for the promotion of female education in India and the East, she immediately took up the work of starting a girls' school for Chinese girls, which was soon followed by the opening of a boys' school.

Mrs.Gutzlaff's comprador (买办) happened to come from my village and was actually my father's friend and neighbor. It was through him that my parents heard about Mrs.Gutzlaff's school and it was doubtlessly through his influence and means that my father got me admitted into the school. It has always been a mystery to me why my parents should put me into a foreign school, instead of a traditional Confucian school, where my big brother was placed. Most certainly such a step would have been more suitable for Chinese public opinion, taste, and the wants of the country than to allow me to attend an English school. Moreover, a Chinese belief is the only

avenue in China that leads to political promotion, influence, power and wealth.I can only guess that as foreign communication with China was just beginning to grow, my parents hoped that it might be worthwhile to put one of their sons to learn English. In this way he might become an interpreter and have a more advantageous position to enter the business and diplomatic world.I am wondering if that influenced my parents to put me into Mrs.Gutzlaff's school. As to what other sequences it has eventually brought about in my later life, they were entirely left in the hands of God.

根据第三段中的“It was through him that my parents heard about ...my father got me admitted into the school.”

2.Why did the author's parents put him into an English school? A.Because it met with Chinese public opinion. B.Because an English school was more influential. C.Because he could become a successful interpreter. D.Because foreign trade with China was developing fast. 根据最后一段的倒数第三句“In this way he might become an interpreter and have a more advantageous position to enter the business and diplomatic world.”

3.What did the author think of his parents' decision to put him

into an English school? A.It was skeptical.

B.It was wonderful.

C.It was thoughtful.

D.It was mysterious.

been a mystery to me why my parents should put me into a foreign school, instead of a traditional Confucian school, where my big brother was placed.”

4.What does the underlined word “sequences” in the last

sentence probably mean?

A.Results.

B.Order.

C.Tricks.

D.Progress.

根据画线词后的“it has eventually

You may not have heard of Ashoka, but for the past 27 years, this association, founded by Bill Drayton, has fought poverty (贫困 )

and sickness, promoted education and encouraged small businesses. To support these worthy causes, Ashoka provides money for the world's most promising “changemakers” seeking to solve (解决)

urgent problems and would like to create a world in which every citizen is a changemaker.

Drayton believes that anyone can become an agent for change. The important thing is to simply give yourself permission. If you see a problem that you care about, you can help solve it. The young in particular are willing to accept this concept because at heart every child wants to grow into a happy, healthy, contributing adult. In fact, it is many young people's ambition to set up programmes or businesses that improve social conditions. An excellent example is an Ashoka project started in 1995 in Dhaka, which handled the rubbish problem facing the city, helped local farmers and provided an income for poor people there.

When Masqsood and Iftekhar began to study the problem of all the uncollected rubbish that lay in Dhaka's streets, attracting rats and disease, they discovered that 80% of it was natural waste. So they educated the poor people in the city to compost (把…… They knew that they would have a market for the end product because local farmers were struggling with chemical fertilisers (化肥) which were expensive and had reduced the natural minerals in the soil over the years. At first, they were refused, but once they were able to persuade them that there was money to be made, the project took off. In 2009 sales were $14,000.

Drayton is optimistic that in ten years Ashoka will be making really serious, practical progress in bringing about social change by changing the way we look at economic development.

Recently I and other Red Cross volunteers met a group of

victims from Hurricane Katrina. We were there, as mental

health professionals, to offer “psychological first aid” and I was struck by the simple healing power of presence. As we walked in the gate to the shelter, we were greeted with a burst of gratitude (感激) from the first person we met.I felt appreciated, but also

guilty, because I hadn't really done anything yet.

I first realized the power of presence many years ago when a friend's mother passed away unexpectedly.I received a call saying she had just passed away.I wanted to rush down there immediately, but didn't want to intrude (打扰) on this very personal period of sadness.I was torn about what to do.Another friend with me then said, “Just go.Just be there.” I did, and I will never regret it.

Since then, I have not hesitated to be in the presence of others.Once I sat at the bedside of a young man suffering from the pain of his AIDS-related dying. He was not awake, and obviously unaware of others' presence. However, the atmosphere was by no means solemn. His family, playing guitars and singing, allowed him to be present with them as though he were still fully alive.
In my life, I am repeatedly struck by the healing power of presence. In it, none of us are truly alone. It not only is something we give to others but also changes me for the better.

答案:C

13.What did the author do when his friend's mother passed away? A.He hesitated over whether to go. B.He went to his friend's at once. C.He knew what to do instantly. D.He decided not to disturb his friend.
